A Week With Miss California

By: ray.perry : April 25, 2012

This week was one of the most exciting weeks as Miss California 2011! Not only because I had the opportunity to represent Miss America's official swimsuit sponsor in New York but I also had the privilege of meeting every contestant vying for the title of Miss California 2012!

Traveling back to the home city of the Miss California Pageant to welcome fifty-eight young women driven to become Miss California 2012 was surreal. It was hard to believe that my year of service is coming to a close and one very special young lady would soon be gracing the stage as the new Miss California. While in Fresno, I shared a few of my experiences as Miss California and the impact the title has made on my life. It was no surprise that my trip to China with the America Pistachio Growers took up a majority of my time while talking to the girls about being Miss California. It was the experience in China that allowed the contestants to really grasp what the job of Miss California is all about. Being able to represent American Pistachio Growers and the Miss California Organization internationally brought the title to a whole new level! I will never forget talking to a media representative about the benefits of American pistachios and then, in the same breath, turning around and relating to a impoverished Chinese boy about how delicious the nuts are. That is how I sum up the job of Miss California, connecting to every audience at the drop of a hat, no matter the time or place! Due to the experience in China, I learned so much more about what it means to represent a brand and how to adapt to any situation or surrounding. I was impressed to find out how many contestants already knew the health benefits of our pistachios and started to include them in their everyday diet for their swimsuit preparation! After speaking with the Miss California contestants at orientation, I shared a small goodie bag of our pistachios as a congratulations on their hard work coming this far! On the ride back to Orange County I was overjoyed to see updates from a lot of the girls on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram who uploaded pictures eating their bag of pistachios! A few contestants went as far as making a video and song about APG and pistachios, saying that they can't wait to represent the America Pistachio Growers as Miss California 2012! Overall, I was extremely impressed with all fifty-eight girls and I know that judges will have a very hard task come June 30th!

While in Fresno with the Miss California contestants, I received a call from the CEO of Komplique, the official swimsuit sponsor of the Miss America Pageant, asking if I was available to model their swimsuits and ready-to-wear line in New York City! This was such exciting news considering they are a national sponsor and have access to every state titleholder and Miss America herself! Before I knew it, I was on a flight to the big apple, pistachios in hand! In the first 10 hours of being in New York City I had run into my ultimate celebrity crush, Zac Efron, met up with the Komplique team for a fitting and even managed to spot Merrill Moses, Men's USA Waterpolo player and fellow pistachio lover in Times Square! It was an incredible experience to have under my Miss California sash and a week I will never forget. While in New York I modeled six different Komplique collections and managed to discover the career path I want to pursue after my reign as Miss California comes to a close...You'll have to wait for my final blog entry to find out what that is! Needless to say, this week was one I will never forget and am excited that I got to share it with all of you!
Until next time!
