On your marks, get set, go nuts for pistachios!

Local runners fuel up for the British 10k – 8 July 2012 - With the British 10k run racing into London on 8 July, the thoughts of local fitness fanatics turn to the best preparation and recovery techniques for the event. Help is at hand from American Pistachio Growers, who will be fuelling participants with the Power of Pistachios, filling their goody bags with little green nuts- the ideal snack for athletes.

To undertake such an endurance event, the participants will need to be thinking carefully about their nutrition and diet in the run up to the race, and pistachios are the perfect snack to help them along in their training. The high protein content- 6 grams per serving of 49 nuts- helps runners to build the crucial muscles they will need to carry them through the race. As well as protein, pistachios also contain less than 2 grams of saturated fat per serving, and are a great source of vitamins and minerals that are crucial for a healthy diet- it’s no wonder they’re the official snack of Olympic hopefuls, the US Water Polo teams!

According to Dr. Cathy Kapica, Adjunct Professor of Nutrition at Tufts University, and a science advisor to the American Pistachio Growers : ‘’The odd snack here and there isn’t a bad thing. In fact snacks can be an important part of a healthy eating style. Choosing snack foods that are nutritious and taste good, such as pistachios, will help to alleviate the sense of guilt around snacking.”

And it’s not just in the build-up that pistachios can help- as runners recover from the race, studies show that eating protein-rich foods such as pistachios after strenuous exercise can also help reduce soreness and rebuild muscles for a quick recovery. After completing a strenuous 10 kilometres through the heart of London, these guys will definitely need a pick-me-up, and that’s where American Pistachios come in, to power them through to the finish and beyond.

Don’t just take our word for it though, the USA Water Polo Teams, who are seeking success at this year’s Olympics, enjoy American Pistachios as their "Official Snack". And if you want to spice up your snacking but still get all the great benefits of eating pistachios, enjoy our recipes below.
