Chelyabinsk, Russia - June 16 - The USA Men's National Team took fourth place at the FINA World League Super Final after suffering a shootout loss, 13-11, at the hands of Montenegro. After leading through three periods, a small comeback was needed and Michael Rosenthal (Miami, FL/USC/NYAC) scored as time expired in the fourth period to force a 10-10 tie and the shootout. Team USA missed three of their first four shots in the shootout while Montenegro converted three of their first four shots to claim the match. Next up for Team USA will be the FINA World Championships this July in Barcelona, Spain.
The match against Montenegro was a chance for redemption for Team USA as they lost to Montenegro earlier in the week 9-4. This contest was much closer and saw the United States in the lead for the majority of the match. Alex Bowen (Santee, CA/Stanford/Stanford) personally outscored Montenegro in the first period, scoring twice to put the United States ahead 2-1.
In the second the United States started to build their lead going ahead 4-2 on a John Mann (Newport Beach, CA/California/NYAC) with 2:24 left. Montenegro came back to close within 4-3, but Greg Enloe (Hanford, CA/UC-Irvine/SOCAL) responded with a tally for a 5-3 advantage with 1:35 remaining. Montenegro scored on their next possession but Team USA remained in front 5-4 going into halftime. The third period saw the United States again trying to put Montenegro away. Rosenthal scored with 3:18 left in the period to take a 7-5 lead and then Alex Obert (Stockton, CA/UOP/Pacific Polo) hit on a power play strike to give the United States their largest lead at 8-5. Montenegro would add a goal with less than two minutes to play and the United States led 8-6 going to the fourth.
Montenegro rallied in the fourth scoring the first two goals of the period to tie the game at 8-8. Rosenthal put the United States back in front 9-8 with 2:24 remaining. Montenegro ran off two straight goals to grab a 10-9 lead and seemed to be on their way to victory until Rosenthal came through with the equalizer.
In the shootout the United States missed their first two shots while Montenegro hit on both for a 12-10 lead. Bowen scored on the third shot for the United States and Montenegro missed prolonging the match with the USA down 12-11. Unfortunately for Team USA they would miss on their fourth shot and Montenegro would score, winning the match 13-11.
